Age Spots

Prevention is the key here.  Always use good quality skin care with high factor block of at least SPF 30.  Apply this in summer and winter.

If you’re unhappy with the appearance of age spots, treatments are available that will gradually lighten or remove them.

Age spot treatments include:

Prescription bleaching creams (hydroquinone) used alone or with retinoids (tretinoin) will gradually fade the spots over several months.

You must use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 if you use retinoids.

The treatments may result in temporary itching, redness, burning or dryness.

Obagi Nu- Derm

As skin ages and is exposed to UVA and UVB rays, the turnover of skin cells slows significantly, throwing off the balance between the growth of healthy new cells and the sloughing of old, damaged cells.

Additionally, collagen and elastin begin to break down, causing the skin to lose resilience resulting in fine lines, wrinkles and sagging.

Daily exposure to UV light then accelerates this aging process and may cause uneven colouring and pigmentation (age spots).

The Nu-Derm System transforms your skin and penetrates below the surface of your skin to transform skin cell functions at the cellular level and correct the damage within. Using a specific dose and frequency that’s recommended specifically by your skin care professional, the prescription-strength system exfoliates old skin leaving healthy, new skin that looks and acts younger.

Freezing (cryotherapy).

This procedure involves applying liquid nitrogen using a small pen to the age spots to destroy the extra pigment. The lesion peels off over the next couple of weeks. At that point the skin will be pink so it is essential to use sunblock.

This is a treatment best saved for times when your skin won’t be exposed to sunshine.

Freezing is typically used on a single age spot or a small grouping of age spots.

The treatment may temporarily irritate the skin and poses a slight risk of permanent scarring or discolouration.
