Volume Loss and Skin Quality After 50: What Actually Works

As summer settles in, many of Karen’s clients start thinking ahead to autumn, and to how their skin is holding up along the way. Two things come up again and again in consultations: a change in volume, particularly around the cheeks and jawline, and a general dip in skin quality, whether that’s dullness, dryness or fine lines becoming more noticeable. Karen answers some of the questions she hears most often on this.

Why does volume loss become more noticeable after 50?

It comes down to collagen and fat distribution. As we get older, the body produces less collagen and existing fat pads in the face begin to shift and thin out, particularly around the cheeks, temples and jawline. This is a completely natural part of ageing, but it’s often what people are noticing when they say they look tired even when they’re not.

What is Sculptra, and why has it become so popular recently?

Sculptra works differently to a standard filler. Rather than adding volume directly, it stimulates the skin to produce its own collagen gradually over several weeks, which is what gives such a natural looking result. Karen has noticed a real shift in how popular it’s become at Harley Court. Previously it was used far less often, largely because the traditional method involved a needle and a high number of injections, with bruising almost guaranteed. Now, using a cannula instead, most people only need around four injections. It’s quicker, considerably less painful, causes far fewer bruises, and the results still build gradually and naturally over time.

Does this mean it’s a good option for people who are nervous about injectables?

Often, yes. The cannula technique tends to be far more comfortable than people expect, and because the results appear gradually rather than overnight, nobody will be able to put their finger on what’s changed, they’ll simply say you look well or refreshed. It suits people who want a natural outcome rather than a dramatic one.

What about skin quality itself, rather than volume?

Volume and skin quality often go hand in hand, and Karen frequently looks at both together during a consultation. Skin boosters and treatments like Profhilo can work well alongside volume treatments, focusing on hydration, texture and overall radiance rather than structure. Which combination makes sense really depends on the individual, which is why a proper consultation matters more than picking a treatment off a list.

Why start thinking about this before autumn?

Because results like these build gradually, starting now means they’ll have settled in nicely by the time autumn arrives, rather than trying to fit everything in at the last minute. It also gives plenty of time for a review appointment along the way, so nothing is rushed.

If you’ve noticed changes in volume or skin quality and would like to talk through what might help, Karen offers honest, unhurried consultations with no pressure to book anything on the day.
