Microneedling

How it works

Microneedling works as a skin repair treatment to improve the appearance of large pores and fine lines.  It is also used to reduce scars, particularly acne scars.

It uses tiny needles attached to a device to gently puncture the skin, causing a series of punctures. The skin responds to this by naturally producing collagen and elastin to repair itself. The collagen and elastin created by micro-needling work to smooth and firm the skin, plumping out deep lines and improving the indented or red appearance of stretch marks.

The treatment can be enhanced by applying a chemical peel to your skin immediately after your micro needling treatment, which allows the chemical peel to work deep into the skin as the channels are open after being punctured by the treatment.

What you need to know

We normally recommend a series of 2-4 treatments normally 4- 6 weeks apart. When treating scarring you may find additional sessions necessary.

This treatment is suitable for use on the face and body, for both male and female clients. It takes approximately 30 minutes and is far less invasive than many alternative solutions.  You can normally return to your daily activities straight away (although you may notice some redness/swelling for the next few hours).

FAQ's

Microneedling Advantages: Microneedling offers minimal downtime with 24-48 hours of redness versus weeks for deeper treatments. It’s suitable for all skin types unlike some lasers that can’t treat darker skin tones. The natural process stimulates your body’s own collagen production, it’s combination friendly as it can be combined with topical treatments, and it’s cost-effective being more affordable than laser treatments.

Vs. Chemical Peels: Microneedling provides depth control with precise needle depth versus variable acid penetration. Skin type suitability makes microneedling safer for sensitive skin. Downtime is similar healing time but with less risk of pigmentation changes. Results show both stimulate collagen but microneedling offers more control.

Vs. Laser Treatments: Cost is significantly less expensive than fractional lasers, comfort is greater as it’s more comfortable than ablative laser treatments, versatility allows treating body areas where laser isn’t suitable, and safety provides lower risk of complications.

Combination Approaches: Microneedling plus PRP provides enhanced healing and results, microneedling plus Vitamin C improves product absorption, microneedling plus Sculptra offers advanced collagen stimulation, and seasonal treatments allow laser in winter with microneedling year-round.

Facial Areas: Full face is the most common treatment area, neck and décolletage for anti-ageing and sun damage, around eyes for fine lines and texture improvement, and acne scarring on cheeks, forehead, and chin areas.

Specialised Treatments: Stretch marks require deeper needle depth (1.5-2.5mm), surgical scars need customised treatment protocol, hyperpigmentation is combined with appropriate serums, and hair loss treatment uses scalp microneedling for hair growth stimulation.

Area-Specific Considerations: Needle depth varies by area with face using 0.5-1.5mm, treatment frequency may require more sessions for certain areas, healing time varies as thicker skin areas heal differently, and cost variations mean larger areas cost more per session.

Professional Treatment (Clinical Grade): Professional treatment uses 0.5-2.5mm needle depth penetration, sterile environment with medical-grade sterilisation protocols, practitioner expertise with trained professionals who assess and adjust treatment, advanced serums with medical-grade products applied during treatment, and safety monitoring with immediate response to adverse reactions.

At-Home Devices: At-home devices are limited to 0.25-0.5mm needle depth for safety, sterilisation depends on user-dependent cleaning protocols, technique lacks professional guidance during treatment, products are over-the-counter serums with lower concentrations, and risk management has no professional monitoring.

Effectiveness Differences: Professional depth creates more significant collagen stimulation response, results timeline shows clinical treatments have faster and more dramatic results, skin concerns mean professional treatment addresses deeper issues, and product absorption allows medical-grade serums to penetrate more effectively.

Safety Considerations: Infection risk is higher with improper home technique, skin damage is possible with over-treatment without professional guidance, contraindications require professional assessment of suitability, and emergency response means professional treatment includes immediate care.

Immediate Post-Treatment (First 24 hours): No makeup as skin needs to heal without potential irritants, gentle cleansing using only provided gentle cleanser, avoid touching as hands carry bacteria that could cause infection, and sun protection is essential but use physical sunscreen only.

24-48 Hours Post-Treatment: Mineral makeup can be applied after 24 hours if needed, gentle application using clean brushes or sponges, avoid liquid foundation and stick to powder-based products, and remove gently using oil-free makeup remover.

48-72 Hours Post-Treatment: Normal makeup routine can usually be resumed fully, check skin reaction by monitoring for any irritation, use quality products that are high-quality and non-comedogenic, and continue gentle removal with gentle cleansing.

Activity Restrictions: Exercise should be avoided for 24-48 hours as sweating can irritate, swimming should avoid pools and ocean for 48-72 hours, saunas and steam should be avoided for 1 week, and sun exposure should be minimal for first week with always using SPF.

Work and Social Activities: Desk jobs can return immediately with mineral makeup, client-facing roles may need 24-48 hours depending on redness, special events should be planned with treatment 1 week before important occasions, and photography should be avoided for 2-3 days due to potential redness.

Ideal Candidates: Skin concerns include acne scars, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and texture issues. It’s suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin, effective from early 20s onwards for age range, and requires realistic expectations with understanding it’s a gradual process.

Skin Types and Considerations: Sensitive skin should start with shorter needle depths, acne-prone skin shows excellent results for acne scarring but should avoid during active breakouts, mature skin finds it highly effective for fine lines and texture, and hyperpigmented skin finds it safe for all ethnicities unlike some laser treatments.

Contraindications: Microneedling should be avoided in the presence of:

    • *Active acne, cold sores, or other skin infections
    • *A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
    • *Blood disorders, including clotting problems or blood-thinning medication use
    • *Pregnancy and breastfeeding (as a precaution, due to lack of safety data)
    • *Ongoing use of certain topical medications like isotretinoin (Roaccutane)
    •

Always consult with a qualified practitioner for a personalised assessment to ensure microneedling is suitable and safe for your specific skin type and concerns.
